Brazil: Modernity as Tradition
Pavilion of Brazil | 14th Architecture Biennale

There are few countries that metabolized modern architecture fundamentals as Brazil did; that could explain why the country’s traditional architecture, despite its importance, has never been considered “the real” Brazilian architecture while the modern one has.

The pavilion of Brazil at the 14th Venice Architecture Biennale depicts 100 years of evolution of a country that also brought a great contribution to the history of architecture. Nevertheless, such contributions have often been underestimated by the criticism and wrongly considered as “anomalies” or exceptions not really reflecting the actual situation of Brazil.
Now that the nation has to face the challenges of globalization, its architecture needs again to evolve so to give a proper reply to the requirements of sustainability and to the huge urban development process it is currently experiencing.
