Unterlinden Museum Colmar, Herzog & de Meuron

The Musée Unterlinden in Colmar, Alsace, is a museum dedicated to art from the Middle Ages to the present day, archeology, and decorative arts.

Opened in 1853, the Unterlinden Museum is housed in a Dominican monastery dating to the 13th century. In 2015 the museum was extended by incorporating the art-nouveau building of the former Colmar public baths and adding a modern expansion designed by famed Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron.

The museum is renowned for its outstanding collection of paintings and sculptures dating from the 15th to the 21st century. The Medieval to Renaissance art collection includes notable works mainly by German artists, including the famous Isenheim altarpiece by Matthias Grünewald and notable works by Martin Schongauer, Hans Holbein the Elder, and Lucas Cranach the Elder, among others. The modern art collection features works from Monet, Bonnard, Magnelli, Picasso, and Dubuffet.
The Unterlinden museum also accommodates collections of furniture, decorative art, musical instruments, and arms dating from the 16th to the 18th century and an archeology collection covering from the Neolithic era to the Merovingian period, including an exceptional Roman mosaic of the 3rd century AD.

The Unterlinden museum program of events and activities includes temporary exhibitions, guided tours, and educational programs.
The museum also contains a shop, a café, and a sculpture garden.
