Musée Photographie Mougins 1

The Musée de la Photographie André Villers is a museum of photography located in the village of Mougins, south-eastern France.

Founded in 1986, the museum, entitled to French photographer André Villers (1930 – 2016), is accommodated in an old house in the historical center of Mougins, a beautiful medieval village on the outskirts of Cannes, on the French Riviera.

Mougins is also known as the place where Pablo Picasso lived from 1961 until his death in 1973, residing in a villa known as Notre Dame de Vie.
A personal friend of Picasso, Villers portrayed – along with many celebrated artists of the 20th century – the last twelve years of Picasso in a number of famous black-and-white pictures, which form collectively an exceptional depiction of the everyday life and artistic work of the great Spanish artist in his maturity.

The permanent exhibition of the Musée de la Photographie is divided into two parts.
The most important part features a small, yet very interesting, collection of photographs of Picasso shot by Villers and other famous photographers of the 20th century – including Lucien  Clergue, Denise  Colomb, Robert  Doisneau,  David  Douglas  Duncan,  Jacques-Henri  Lartigue,  Sanford  Roth, and Edward  Quinn. This exhibition is located on the first floor and in the staircase of the museum, arranged in an unpretentious, almost domestic way.

On the ground floor, a second part of the permanent exhibition presents a collection of historical cameras – including the medium-format Rolleiflex 3.5 frequently used by Villers – and photo accessories, as well as old photographic shots depicting Mougins in the 20th century.
The museum also includes a small book and gift shop. Entrance is free.
