Building
The building of the museum, designed by Zaha Hadid, is a large, organic-shaped construction whose overlapping volumes create a surprising interior space, with staircases and footbridges suspended in the museum’s iconic full-height lobby. We wrote a detailed article on the architecture of the MAXXI Museum, you can find its first part here.

Collections and permanent exhibition
The institution which owns and manages the museum, the  MAXXI Foundation, was created to promote contemporary art and architecture, with a special focus on the Italian scene of the 20th and 21st centuries. Therefore, the museum hosts two collections.

The art collection comprises over 400 works – paintings, sculptures, videos, and installations –  by Italian and international artists including Alighiero Boetti, Francesco Clemente, Gino de Dominicis, Candida Hofer, William Kentridge, Mario Merz, Gerhard Richter, and Franz West.
The architecture collection features drawings, photographs, and scale models by architects such as Toyo Ito, Rem Koolhaas, Pier Luigi Nervi, Renzo Piano, Aldo Rossi, and Carlo Scarpa. among others.

Pieces from both collections are displayed on a rotating basis in the large permanent exhibition gallery space on the first floor of the museum.

The program of activities of the MAXXI includes temporary exhibitions, seminars, conferences, education activities, guided tours, and special events, all focused on the promotion of contemporary art and architecture.

Along with exhibition areas, the MAXXI houses a cafe, a restaurant, and a bookshop.
