The Fundación Juan March in Madrid is a cultural institution and art center founded in 1955 by Spanish businessman Juan March Ordinas.
History and building
The Fundación Juan March promotes humanistic and scientific culture by organizing temporary exhibitions, mostly focused on modern and contemporary art, as well as concerts, lectures, conferences, seminars, workshops, and research activities.
The foundation is headquartered in Madrid, in the Salamanca district. Designed by architect José Luis Picardo in the early 1970s; the 18,000-square-meter (190,000-square-foot) Juan March Foundation’s building, along with exhibition spaces, includes a 180,000-record library specialized in theater and music, a 280-seat concert hall, a 110-seat conference room, a 1,700-square-meter sculpture garden, a cafe, and a shop.
A large sculpture of Spanish artist Eduardo Chillida stands in front of the foundation building’s entrance.
Program of exhibitions
Exhibitions at Madrid’s headquarters are mostly focused on Spanish and international art with special attention to contemporary art themes and movements and emerging artists. In the last 40 years, the foundation also hosted exhibitions on some of the most important figures of modern and contemporary art, including Edward Hopper, Pablo Picasso, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Rauschenberg, Irving Penn, Robert Motherwell, David Hockney, Georgia o’ Keefe, Francis Bacon, and Tom Wesselmann.
Since 2006, the program of the foundation is more focused on multi-disciplinary thematic exhibitions exploring the intertwining of various cultural, scientific, and creative fields, such as visual arts, design, technology, and new media.
The Juan March Foundation’s network also includes the Museo de Arte Abstracto Español (Spanish Museum of Abstract Art) in Cuenca and the Museu Fundación Juan March in Palma de Mallorca.
