Venice Architecture Biennale 2021 officially presented

On April 12, 2021, the 17th architecture exhibition of the Venice Biennale has been presented on live streaming. The presentation included speeches by the exhibition curator Hashim Sarkis, the new president of the Biennale Roberto Cicutto, and Christopher Turner from the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.

Opening the press conference, the Biennale president spoke about the year 2020 citing Italian film director Ermanno Olmi “Do not think that downtimes are useless. Downtimes can be very important if they are useful to understand what we have to do, what we will have to do, and what are the objectives of our actions. (…) So, this additional year we had at our disposal was not lost.”, Cicutto said.
Hashim Sarkis, who opened his speech advocating the fundamental role of architecture, joked about the title of this year’s Biennale “How will we live together”, which was coined before the pandemic. For its curator, the exhibition poses us the question “how we will live together?” with even more force, given the isolation that the pandemic has imposed upon us, and noted how this year’s Biennale has transformed from an event into a process. Sarkis talked about how collaborations with others people have been intensified including – together with those with national pavilions’ curators and participating architects – those with organizations such as the Dance Biennale, with a view to creating an “expanded” program as diverse as possible.
Indeed, the program will include some innovations including live broadcasting of events, installation processes and the workshops and events of the “Meetings on architecture” series, and two new publications in addition to the exhibition catalog; also a collective exhibition of all the participants in the Biennale has been announced, together with a series of satellite exhibitions that, after the end of the Biennale, will tour internationally.

Victoria & Albert Museum’s curator, Christopher Turner, spoke about the collaboration between his museum and the Biennale, which started in 2015. Turner remarked how partnerships between British and European cultural institutions are more important than ever and presented this year’s joint project which is focused on crucial themes such as multiculturalism and immigration and will present three community projects for mosques in Great Britain, together with the Islamic art collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum.
