SOM and TranSystems Lead Redesign of Chicago’s State/Lake Station

The city of Chicago presented the preliminary project for the redevelopment of the State / Lake and Red Line Connection elevated station, which, located in the heart of the city, is the second busiest on the CTA network. The project carried out by SOM – Skidmore, Owings & Merrill – TranSystem and a team of experts includes wider and safer platforms, a large glass roof, a new connecting bridge, passenger elevators, and street-level improvements.
The structure of the glass cover guarantees excellent summer weather and protection from the strong Chicago winds in winter. The transparency and lightness of the new roof draws on Chicago’s history of structural innovation, from the movable bridges and the first skyscrapers, as well as allowing a wide view of the Chicago Theater and the adjacent historic buildings.
