Anicka Yi’s friendly aliens populate Tate Modern in London

London’s Tate Modern is populated by alien presences part of the installation “In Love with the world” created by the Korean-born artist Anicka Yi.
The work offers us the vision of a new ecosystem inside the Turbine Hall, the large post-industrial space in the heart of Tate Modern originally built to house gigantic electric generators.
Yi’s installation once again populates the Turbine Hall space with machines, but this time they are devices, called aerobes, that hover in the air and are characterized by organic and friendly shapes.
Their aspect, based on that of oceanic life forms and mushrooms, is also a way to present artificial intelligence from an original point of view, encouraging us to think of new ways in which machines could inhabit the world. Anicka Yi has also created unique olfactory landscapes, which change every week, with smells tied to a specific moment in Bankside’s history.
Two species of aerobes explore the turbine hall, exhibiting individual and group behaviors. “Xenojellies” have semitransparent bodies each with a different colored top and patterned tentacles, while “planulae” are bulbous and covered by yellow hair. Both species are filled with helium, propelled by rotors, and powered by a small battery pack.
Yi is known for her experimental work that explores the fusion of technology and biology.
By breaking down the distinctions between plants, animals, microorganisms, and machines, she asks us to think about further understanding ourselves as human beings and the ecosystems we live in.
