Art, architecture, design from the 1980s to present day on view at Centre Pompidou
by Riccardo Bianchini, Inexhibit

A History. Art, architecture, design from the 1980s until today, this is the title of the installation of the contemporary collections of the Centre Pompidou in Paris for the Summer 2014 – Spring 2016 period.

The exhibition, on view until March 2016, is a ambitious portrait of contemporary creativity, from the Eighties to the present day, showcasing some 400 works by nearly 200 artists, architects and designers.
Arranged on a “circuit” formed by 17 sections, both thematic and chronological, the exhibition features paintings, sculptures, installations, audiovisuals, drawings, photographs, blueprints, sketches, models and object. The idea is to create a manifold depiction of how art, architecture and design have developed in the last thirty years.

Of course, to provide a comprehensive overview on such a vast theme over a so long period of time is too much even for the prodigious capacity of the Centre Pompidou.
Therefore, exhibition curator Christine Marcel and her team focused on how political, social, technological, geographical and economical changes have influenced creativity worldwide from the ’80s onward.

From the fall of the Berlin’s Wall to the emergence of China and India as global players, from the digital revolution to the Iraq war, the international scene has profoundly changed and so is the way art depicts and interprets the world we live in.

Similarly to what Okwui Enwezor recently devised for the 2015 Venice Art Biennale, A History. Art, architecture, design from the 1980s until today reflects such changes also by paying a special attention to countries which art scene has gained an unprecedented visibility in the last decades, like many in Eastern Europe, the Far and Middle East, India, Africa and Latin America.

As mentioned earlier, the exhibition circuit is composed of 17 sections, one of which dedicated to performances.
