A constellation of Japanese architects – exhibition at MoMA

From March 13 through July 31, 2016, the MoMA – Museum of Modern Art in New York features an architecture exhibition evocatively entitled “A Japanese Constellation: Toyo Ito, SANAA, and Beyond”.

Conceived by Pedro Gadanho, former curator of contemporary architecture at the MoMA and currently director of the MAAT in Lisbon, the exhibition focuses on the career by the acclaimed Japanese architects Toyo Ito and SANAA (Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa), as well as on the influence that their work and vision have had and are still having on three generations of Japanese architects.

Therefore, the work by a selection of architects, which comprises Toyo Ito, Kazuyo Sejima, Ryue Nishizawa (Sanaa), Sou Fujimoto, Akihisa Hirata, and Junya Ishigami, will be depicted in the exhibition through drawings, scale models, and pictures related to over 40 architectural designs.

“A Japanese Constellation: Toyo Ito, SANAA, and Beyond” will be subdivided into sections, dedicated to each of the various architects portrayed, that will be enclosed by semi-transparent partitions on which images and videos will be displayed, thus making comparisons and revealing influences and connections among them.
